Description
You know how it is... a slow day at work and I have access to GIMP. So downloaded a texture map of Venus and a couple of NASA photos, 10 minutes later produced this.
I've never used GIMP's sphere mapping filter before and it looks like it can be a shortcut to producing planets in artwork.
Hope you like my boredom killing little piece.
Thanks for looking.
Iain

nice image
Pretty neat! Lovely texture on the sphere, but perhaps the orange glow around it is too much? ie it seems like a pretty thick atmosphere you were trying to simulate, but if was that thisck and foggy(organge) then the surface details we see would not be as clear as they are - thus a miss-match between the atmosphere/glow and the surface detail?
Paid to play....that's how it should always be :-) Kinchie makes a good point but before I read that, I was thinking eclipse so it works for me.....I can see this being the start of some interesting images :-) (Happy 400th by the way )
Thanks for the comments :) I think if I do another of these I will take your advice and reduce the atmos haze and blur the surface detail. Like I said, more of an exercise in easing my boredom and playing about with various filters. Next time I'll take it more seriously, lol. 400? Grud... I never even realised O.o
Very impressive - especially for a quickie!
Nice work Iain, especially for a quickie "I'm bored" job, I too agree with kinchie though mate, me, I'd lose the haze completely, and there you go, one very dead totally nuked world, a good backdrop methinks to one of your clever sci-fi images Billy
I hadn't noticed this one when you posted it, (probably because I've had much less time to wander Renderosity these days) but it's a real beauty! I agree that the Venus-texture looks fantastic, and that an atmospheric haze would also be a cool touch, but it's not necessary to make this a spectacular image. One trick I use for adding that haze is to copy the planet-sphere onto a new layer, blur the daylights out of it, and then make it semi-transparent over the sharper image of the planet below it. It's kind of fun making things like these space-scenes isn't it?
