Description
Part of the bell tower at Saint Edwards Seminary in Kenmore, Washington.
I guess when the Catholics turned the property over to the Washington State Parks Department, they took the saints with them.

Just went looking for info about empty niches as architectural adornment and found this: "Though a niche in either Classical or Gothic contexts may be empty and merely provide some articulation and variety to a section of wall, the cult origins of the niche suggested that it be filled with a statue." Another reading brought me this: A recess in the face of a wall, or a recessed opening in, for instance, a gable-head, intended to house a figure sculpture. In some Gothic Revival buildings empty niches are used as decorative features. Glad this subject came up thanks to St. Edwards. What beautiful detail you've captured...
