Really, I've no idea but it looks like there are two little knobs on the side for something to come out of them or something to go in them - like a handle?

Guessing it is a lid. The spouts on each side has me quite baffled. Great capture of whatever it is Mike.
It looks like one of those maritime things called a capstan you pass a line/rope around to haul in a sail of pull in the boom of a sail boat. But why it's on a slab of marble beats me! Interesting photo and challenging question! Keep up the good work! :-)
