Description
This pelican was sitting at the boat landing near the seafood restaurants at the Sydney Fish Market, Blackwattle Bay. It was close to the dumpsters where Ibis, Raven, and Gulls had established a pecking order to determined who had access to the trash first.
This bird was sitting so still, and it was so large, that I thought at first it was a fake. Only when I came a little closer did it move and it startled me.
The Australian Pelican is a large bird 160 to 180cm (5.2 to 5.9-ft) long with a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.6m (7.5 to 8.5-ft). It can weigh between 4 to 13kg (8.8 to 29lb) although most weigh between 4.54 to 7.7kg (10 to 17lb).
The pinkish bill is enormous and is the largest bill in the avian world.
