Description
One of the highlights for me was capturing this lovely bird in the wild, and remembering that being territorial it came out of the bush at Corkscrew Swap when I mimicked it's call.
The male sings in a loud, clear whistle from the top of a tree or another high location to defend his territory
He will chase off other males entering his territory. He may mistake his image on various reflective surfaces as an invading male, and will fight his reflection relentlessly.
The Northern Cardinal learns its songs, and as a result the songs vary regionally. It is able to easily distinguish the sex of another singing Northern Cardinal by its song alone. Mated pairs often travel together.
Male often feeds the female as part of their courtship behavior
Both sexes sing clear, whistled song patterns, which are repeated several times, then varied. Some common phrases are described as "cheeeer-a-dote, cheeer-a-dote-dote-dote," "purdy, purdy, purdy...whoit, whoit, whoit, whoit," "what-cheer, what-cheer... wheet, wheet, wheet, wheet" and cheer, cheer, cheer, what, what, what, what.
The Northern Cardinal has a distinctive alarm call, a short metallic 'chip' sound. This call often is given when predators approach the nest, in order to give warning to the female and nestling's In some cases it will also utter a series of chipping notes. The frequency and volume of these notes increases as the threat becomes greater. This chipping noise is also used by a Cardinal pair to locate each other, especially during dusk hours when visibility wanes.

Fantastic! Color and detail are excellent, so is DOF.
We don't have these here in So. California. But one of my fav birds. Beautiful shot and lighting. That bokeh is awesome in this shot. Makes the reds just pop off the image. Bravo man!
Gorgeous capture of this handsome fellow!! Corkscrew is a beautiful area- I went there last year as it's not far from where my parents live, and could have spent days in there. So much to see! I hope you got to see the painted buntings that frequent the feeders... ;o)
Beautiful capture...............
Gorgemous! Thanks, Daniel!
This is so beautiful ! :)
wow you can call these birds. must take time to learn the sounds it makes. wonder if a mocking bird can make the sounds of this bird? cool shot
This is such a colorful and fantastic looking photo Danny, it is always a pleasure to visit your gallery.
Well done mate, love these birds, it must have been awesome to be there where they are. Yep as you know I am back, and glad to be so. Long story about flickr I dumped the account, we'll have to meet up soon mate and grab a few beers and pictures :}
what a beauty! wonderful captured too!!
Sharp and bright
I used to have these when I lived in Virginia; I spent a lot of time carrying on whistling conversations with them, they were very gregarious! Beautiful shot, Danny!
Danny, this is amazing. The pose and the detail is breathtaking. As a child in Ohio, these and bluebirds and red-breasted robins were everywhere. Cardinals are rare where I am now. This is such a stellar sight.
Magnificent Photography Daniel!
Oh My!!! Gorgeous! Cardinals once were often seen in our area, but I fear that herbicide/pesticide use on crops has taken a toll on this bird and many others as well. Makes me very sad.
So sharp a beautiful image Vibrant....and Vivid... I see lots of cardinals...but this one is just awesome...... Hugs Susan~
Awesome work! Great clarity on the bird which is enhanced by your narrow DoF. Great information too.
wonderful colored bird, excellent photo
SUPERB shot!! .... I live in a wooded area with a nearby nursery/tree farm and many large pine trees in my yard .... When it snows, the ground is clear underneath the big pines and birds of all kinds often feed there in the early a.m. ... The other morning, I saw about 20 birds .... Blue Jays, Sparrows, Woodpeckers and about 12 Cardinals or so .... about 6 male and 6 females ....
Beautiful capture, dear Danny. I have never seen one of these birds. HUgs for all day. Di Di. xx
