He was the sunrise
He was an eagle
Flying across the sky
He was a chipmunk
Climbing a tree
He was a salmon
Swimming up stream
He was the wind
Calling my name
He was the life
In a drop of rain
I saw God today
And he saw me

This is precisely the way God or rather the Goddess was expressed in many pre-classical pagan religions of the middle east through to Mesopotamia - before the Judeo-Christian concept of God giving man dominion over the earth and the beasts. How different our world view would have been if those cultures had prevailed. There is no particular reason for civilization not to have advanced but have kept those beliefs intact.
