Description
Historically, Carnaby Street derives its name from Karnaby House, located to its east and originally erected in 1683. It is not now known why the house was so called. The street was probably laid out in 1685 or 1686. First appearing in the ratebooks in 1687, the street was almost completely built up by 1690 with small houses. A market was developed in the 1820s; in his novel, Sybil (1845), Benjamin Disraeli refers to "a carcase-butcher famous in Carnaby-market".

Another street scene. I was being watched: you can see two of the thousands of London CCTV cameras either side if the arched sign.

It is excellent. I thank you. 5+!
Superb capture Clive. God Bless.
Beautiful Carnaby Street, I like this old phone box.
Looks like lots of boutique shops...I can imagine this in days of yore. Well done.
And guess what it was known for during the 1960s - yepp, hippies. It's still famous and can be packed, which is why Big Brother is so interested, considering people of bad behaviour (dare we mention the word terrorists?). Nice photo. Keep up the good work! :-)
super shot
Fantastic pleace and capture.
Super street scene Clive and brilliant to have included the 'phone box.
interesting photo
bonne photo!
Very cool shot
I was shooting in this same neighborhood in September - on Kingly Street (posted here). It is a grand spot to snap people as they seem to be funnelled in by these narrow streets with their high old buildings. I like how you've used the pale tan colors here.
So much to see! Excellent capture.
wonderful shot!!! & TY for the history lesson :-D
Very good POV and composition.
I should love to visit there again! Super pic.
What a lovely little street! Great picture!
What a neat looking place I love those flower boxes on the outside of those buildings... So much to look at there......... Great image Hugs Susan~
Now this place USED to be a blast! And not that long ago either.. Full of REALLY interesting shops selling great clothes and super articles not found in other places! NOW though....look at the picture.. Its designerville! So, unless you are ready to be drastically disappointed, don't go there! It's expensive and a rip off! Blame Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone..... Great shot though, captures it well.. Rob
Interesting photograph!
