Ha! Now let's have a show of hands. How many of you got here from a bot and thought this was going to be another Andrea-inspired padlock shot? LOL!
This is on the I&M Canal near Channahon Illinois, and is part of the hardware necessary for opening and closing the lock gates. Maybe one day I'll show you another shot that will demonstrate how it worked.
You can always look at it as being all about textures, if none of the rest of it interests you. :)

I saw it right away, but, I've seen a few canals in my life - both old (operated manually) and newer (operated mechanically). As you say, this is interesting not only got shapes and camera angle but also from a texture point of view. And,... there's a LOT to trip on in a place like that. Watch your step or drop a good distance into a tight bath! Hard to get out of, too. Keep up the good work! :-)
I know nothing of canals and I was puzzled by the iron gadgets bolted into the rock. Nice shapes and lines though and the textures are wonderful.

Low tech but this gear worked fine for almost 100 years. I find myself gazing at the simple elegance of the old hardware and can almost picture the builder with large iron wrench in hand tightening these bolts in 1848. Makes me wonder what have I ever done that will still be around 160 years from now? There must be some of that type of thinking in the minds of the Sullivans, the Burnhams, the Wrights of this world.

Live not too far from the town of Lockport NY, on the Erie Canal. The name is a dead give-away, grins. A wonderful shot of the workings. The sunshine/shadow thing is wonderful! Oh yeah .. the textures too, grins. And thank you for kind words on "Monarch on Queen Anne's Lace"
