Description
The Hides Hotel is located on Lake Street and Shields Street in Cairns, two blocks from Trinity Bay. From all the places I stayed while in Australia this hotel had the lowest prices, it had budget accommodations, it was also the oldest, and the only one that included breakfast and it had by far the best ambiance.
The Hides was built in 1929 before Cairns become the Mecca for ecotourism for Northern Queensland, when sugarcane was the biggest source of Queensland's income.
Eating breakfast one could sit on the second floor veranda overlooking the plaza and watch the occasional aborigine sit under one of the big Fig trees and rest. Temperature in the morning was around 25C (77F) and the air was balmy and it brought back memories of previous times spent in the tropics.

How appropriate, a corner shot for Hydes Corner. Has a very tropical colonial ambiance. I love the way the paving lines draw you right to the hotel.
