Description
Some ships have freefall lifeboats, stored on a downward sloping slipway, dropping into the water as holdback is released. Such lifeboats are considerably heavier to survive the impact with water. Freefall lifeboats are used for their capability to launch nearly instantly and high reliability, and since 2006 are required on bulk carriers that are in danger of sinking too rapidly for conventional lifeboats to be released.

This one was in the floating dry dock, off the ship and having a bit of maintenance done too.
Thanks again for all the comments,

Gosh! I never knew about these before!
... and the crew is well protected from the raging sea! This is news to me, too. Nice shot of the contraption! :-)
Very interesting craft Great shot
I'd never heard of them before, either. What an interesting craft! It appears to be missing its back end, which makes it quite fun to view!
Nice to see this and great info Clive.
They do need maintenance for sure. My Coastie bro told me about these.
I also have never heard of these. I like the guy sitting casually on top!
'It appears to be missing its back end'. It's not missing it's back end............
Fascinating.
They hit pretty hard too, and you'd better be wearing the full strap-in harness! They say it's wicked. That flat back end is where they scramble in quickly, hoping the last guy closes the door, LOL!
Well Clive!!! You got me, I've honestly never heard of these before.. Great shot and thanks for showing it to us.. any in use shots? ;-) Rob
Something new for me as well. Stunning capture Clive. God Bless.
Wow. Fascinating.
Seen lots of these on ships on The Mersey, given the hight some are carried at, it must be a real 'whiteknuckle' couple of seconds when they drop.A thrill ride nobody wants to take......
I think falling down while sitting in such a boat is no fun...
