Description
This is the American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) and it is native to the southeastern United States and Australia. It can typically reach 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) in height. A jelly can be made from its ripe berries. It has also been used to produce wine. I found it, in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, the northernmost portion of the Everglades. With over 221 square miles (596.47 km2) of Everglades habitat, the Loxahatchee Refuge is home to the American alligator and as many as 257 species of birds may use the Refuge's diverse wetland habitats each year.
The flowers are in clusters, white to pinkish and will draw in butterflies when in bloom. The fruit is a berry, reddish purple with a highly distinctive metallic luster. American beautyberry has been found to be a natural insect repellent to mosquitoes, which can carry yellow fever and malaria, as well as the tick, which carries Lyme disease. Beautiful berries and shot!!!!!
Stunning focus, colors, textured patterns, and very interesting narrative in this stellar presentation, Dana. Really beautiful berries.
Fine colourful capture.
very nice
A superb photo. We have the same shrub in our garden, and the blackbirds always eat the berries. Thank you so much for the info, I didn't know we could make wine from it, or jelly!
Beautiful capture Dana!!
Very beautiful picture and splendid lighting , Dana !
Lovely pic,Very pretty Colour,
Thank you very much for the info! I have seen these. I took pictures of some I saw in Baton Rouge, La. while on a walk with my niece. I had no idea what they were. Now that I know that they are a natural repellant to mosquitoes, I love them for more than their beauty alone. Beautiful capture! Great colors and detail.
