Description
This is a view outside of Domitian Gate at Hierapolis, in southwest Turkey, looking along Frontinus Street. In the distance you can see the other major gate of the city, the Byzantine Gate. That gate is from a later period and was built for defensive purposes, unlike this one, which as I said in my last post was for administrative effect.
However, if you look closely you can see on either side of the Domitian Gate the remains of two guard towers that were built around the same time as the Byzantine Gate. These were from a period when the Byzantine Empire was being threatened. You can see the stone blocks of the towers are much more massive.
This style of vaulted gateway is very typical of Roman architecture in this region. On the left you can see the remains of a series of either temples or shops.
The paving stones of Frontinus Street cover a secret. When it was excavated they discovered a hidden canal that carried water into the city along an underground system and fed water into fountains alongside the street. Very impressive to say the least. I never ceased to be amazed at how many "modern" amenities were present in these ancient cities.
My next shot is a walk along Frontinus Street.
The blocks had a lovely sandy orange hue. I posterized this shot a bit to enhance the rough feel of the stonework.

Absolutely fantastic capture Roxy, marvelous place, a truly fantastic capture! Thank you for sharing!
The lighting is nicely articulated; and thanks for the history, it's wonderful to see these old things. The Romans built to impress.
Holy crap Roxy. I am jealous. I want to go to the Med so bad. Great pics.
Fantastic capture and wonderful history lesson thank you very much
I dream of one day coming to a place like this....great capture friend of exquisite architecture....wow
What a great picture, Roxy! I like this one especially with the color. Very rich colors in a sandy sort of way. Fabulouse architecture and yes, it is always amazing what they had in the way of amenities back then. They weren't as 'backward' as many people tend to think!
Marvellously-built structure!
Fantastic scene. This must have been awesome to see in person
Superb capture!
I'm not a fan of posterization filters as they kill original detail IMHO, but it's a nice shot and great information.
This is beautiful, Roxy. I like the colors and the way you postworked the shot. Your informative note is excellent too! Of course the Roman world was not only a world of soldiers and gladiators. They were very practical and wherever they went they built roads and aquaducts, theaters and therms etc... It's nice to see this in your pictures.
Wonderful capture!
Great photo!

Superb! 5+! Thanks a lot.
Gorgeous shot and lighting!
Excellent shot and great history info. I like that you have a few people in this shot for scale reasons. Nice.
This is incredible! What a spectacular shot of an equally spectacular location! Jeeze - I'd have spent half a day just shooting this from every possible vantage point.... What a BG for your Ishtar renders! Like you, it amazes me just how advanced thes 'ancient' civilizations were. It really makes me wonder how much knowledge was lost through the ages.. Wonder where we would be now, had we the knowledge lost in the destruction of the Alexandria Library....
Fantastic capture
