Description
Found on the road between Parker Canyon Lake and Sonoita, southern Arizona, USA. Agaves are succulents, and there are a couple dozen different species. I don't know which these are. They are used to make tequila, and agave nectar. The juice is very caustic. A fiber from the leaves with the end thorn still attached was used for sewing.
The flower stalks, shown here, grow in a matter of weeks. They can be as much as 24 feet tall. They say you can hear them growing. If the bud comes out of the center, it is a terminal bud. The plant will die after blooming. If the bud comes out of the side, they will bloom annually for awhile.

Awesome capture of this beautiful sunset!!
Nice shot, and thanks for that information about the bud. Didn't know that! They do indeed get very high. I saw some Silverswords in Maui once with a 25 foot blossom going on, just amazing to see!
Fantastic capture.
