I arrived in the old seaside town that afternoon, and after a hearty dinner washed down with a carafe of wine, I still wasn't tired, and although it was getting rather late and it was out of season, I decided to go for a walk. It was a fine evening and I enjoyed the sea air, with an occasional gust of chill wind coming in off the sea. Before I knew it, I had reached the edge of town and discovered an old fairground. Whether it was just closed for the winter or had been abandoned was difficult to tell but there was no-one around. As I wandered around the stalls I smiled at the thought that some people find such places slightly creepy, even when open and lively - after all, they are just all about fun and enjoyment! I was stirred from my thoughts by the sudden flickering of lights on one of the stalls in the middle of the fair. I should have been surprised, but felt strangely drawn towards it. Standing by a Wheel of Fortune game was a young, attractive woman, although she looked slightly ghostly with her faded grey showgirl outfit and pale complexion. Her eyes flashed as they caught the glare of the lights around the stall. "Care to step up and play the Wheel of Fortune, sir", she invited with a smile. I couldn't resist. "OK, how much to play - a dollar?" I asked. She gave a laugh that for some reason sent a slight shiver down my spine. "Oh this is a special game, sir. We don't take money.
