Description
One of the more unusual Hummingbirds is the Buff-tailed Sicklebill. They are found in the lower Andes and adjacent west Amazonian lowlands from southern Colombia and northern Ecuador to Peru and Bolivia and is restricted to the undergrowth of humid forested and wooded habitats, recorded from 590-10,800 ft. (180-3,300 m).
Their peculiar bill is a direct adaption to the shape of certain flowers, namely of the genera Centropogon and Heliconia.
Females look like males but are 20% smaller and are for the most part silent. Males will sing 6 months out of the year.
Rendered in Poser 2012 with no postwork. Models: LB Botanicals Palm shrub and my Perching Place branch and Songbird Remix Sicklebills. Backing Photo (me).
