Description

The Short-toed Snake Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards and harriers. Its prey is mostly reptiles, mainly snakes, but also some lizards. We saw this bird of prey everyday during our week in Lesbos. Le Circaète Jean-le-Blanc (Circaetus gallicus) est une espèce de rapace spécialisé dans la chasse aux reptiles, principalement les serpents. C'est également un excellent planeur, et comme les vautours il se déplace habituellement sans battre des ailes, profitant au maximum de la brise et des ascendances thermiques, les ailes largement étendues. Oiseau migrateur, il passe l'hiver en Afrique, et revient en Europe de début mars à fin septembre pour se reproduire. Nous avons aperçu ce rapace tous les jours pendant notre semaine à Lesbos.
