Description
Pao de Acucar, commonly known as Sugarloaf Mountain, is a 600 million year old granitic monolith. Monoliths similar in height and age are scattered throughout the Rio de Janeiro region and account for the spectacular scenery.
This particular view is from top of Morro da Urca, the location of the intermediate cable car station. The elevation of this station is 218m above sea level. The elevation difference between this station and the top of Sugarloaf Mountain is 176m and the length of the cable between the two stations is 750m.
It is interesting to note the micro climate that exists and is created by this mountain.
The left side of the mountain in this picture is north facing and exposed to sunshine throughout the year. The slope is somewhat steeper than the right side of the mountain, away from the sun. Prevailing winds and local wind currents determine the amount of moisture these two slopes receive. On the north facing slope (the left side of this picture) there are only cacti, whereas on the south facing slope (right side) there are remnants of tropical rain forest.
People can been seen standing at the top, as well as circling Black Vultures. Throughout most of the afternoon as many as 2 dozen or more vultures kept soaring above and near the top. Black Vultures have a wingspan of about 1.5m. They occur from Florida, throughout Central America and through most of tropical South America.

This makes me wonder how long you had to stand there to get those cable cars in just the perfect positions. Wow. What a great shot! The far cable car is so perfectly framed in that patch of light rock, and the near car is a wonderful foil for the composition. Fantastic work!
