Description
In the very first episode of Star Trek - The Next Generation we see the primary hull of the USS Enterprise D separate from the secondary hull and the warp engines to allow the latter two to create a self contained fighting unit. If I remember correctly this was supposed to be the plan for the original TV series Enterprise but it never came to pass. Here's what it could have looked like if it had come to pass - enjoy.

Excellent
In the Star Trek Role Playing game the constitution class was indeed capable of this feat. While we never see this happen in the seriesw we do get a look at the battle bridge (or secondary bridge) in one episode and I believe it is the episode first featuring Kahn.
Yes and the saucer section was supposed to be able to land on planets, like the later 'Voyager'.FX couldn't handle this at the time so the transporter was introduced.Other strange fact, there was a bowling ally onboard, #1 participation sport in America in the 60's. This actually looks very cool, a pity it was never utilised in the show.
