Description
...OMG, I fell in love with the red rocks of Sedona.
...I wanted to give you a short brief about each of the layers seen in this sandstone monolith in the Verde Valley of central Arizona.
...er, let's see, mountain building, erosion; metamorphism, intrusion; sedimentation, volcanism; uplift, mountain-building; deposition, erosion; Permian, Triassic, Tertiary...
...I am way out of my league! lol.
...If any of you are rock hounds take a look at THIS LINK.
...the red rocks of Sedona while mostly sandstone contain other layers and are capped with rim basalts that has kept them from eroding away.
...how old? Formed mostly during the Permian age beginning about 280 million years ago give or take a few million years:)
...why red? Waterbourne iron deposits have coated every grain of sandstone and the sandstone has taken on the rusty color seen above.

Very beautiful Bill, the green contrasts very well with the rocks. Tomorrow I will be uploading a shot from Bryce Canyon in Utah.
A place to visit. It is always over us all these views. All sedimentary mountains bring the dream my friend. Congratulations and many thanks for sharing ((5 + +)) Une place à visiter. C'est toujours au dessus de nous toutes ces vues . Toutes les montagnes sédimentaires apportent le rêve mon ami . Bravo et mille mercis de partager ((5++))
Superb! I wish there had been colour photos when I was doing A level Geography!
Great shot, Bill. The foreground greenery really sets off the reds.
Wow intense colours! Beautiful shot- thanks for sharing! :)

I've used these subjects a few times in my watercolors, and they're sold! Stunning picture and iteresting info! RS
You picked up really stunning colors and details in the rock Bill, excellent capture! :)
fantastic colours of the rock
john wayne must be there somewhere
Amazing Bill. All that time seems to make our lives and problems suddenly seem quite insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
looks fantastic there !!very intense colortones !wonderful capture too !!
terrific rock!
Wunderschöne Felsformation!
Just freakin' amazing, Bill! I love the clarity, and the colors are just to die for! Wow - I've gotta get out there one day..... In the meantime, maybe I can replicate this in Bryce, or even Vue if I ever get to a point where I have a clue what I'm doing... LOL! Beautifil photo, Bill!
Hmmm, I wonder how many times I've used that title. In any event, a stunning capture of the red rocks of Sedona (not Cydonia, the area on Mars), Bill. Although, the color, rugged surface and striations are out of this world in this pic.
They are so amazing! I can see why you fell in love...I've never seen them in person, but I'll bet you'd have to pry me off them with a big power machine. Beautiful iconic capture, Bill!
That place is just gorgeous. Such interesting formations, beautiful colors, stunning valleys and fascinating towns. Super shot, honey! :*
What a splendid sight and a superb capture. Many years of history on show here.
That link was fascinating! I've seen these and photographed similar areas but I had no idea about the complexity of the layers. Someday one very thin layer may be called the Smartphonica Age.
Have lived in Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson. So of course browsing the thumbnails I knew right away it had to be Sedona. Great place and image!
even rocks have wrinkles even so a beautiful place warm hugs, Linda
Stunning view!
GOSH! It is beautiful. A really wonderful shot and such clarity. WOO!!!
Must be even more amazing to see in person. Great natural colors.
magnificent landscape
Such brilliant colors, nice work.
Amazing colours, bet it was even better with the naked eye!!
Bill, this is stunning! A photographers paradise! Such colours.. Glorious.. Has to be a Fave.. lol Super shot mate.. Rob
Incredible rock formation and image Bill!
Beautiful. Red and green contrats so nicely, also the blue. Of interest is the weathering - both vertical (rain water) and horizontal (wind and sand blasting). Keep up the good work! :-)
