Description
The view is from Sugarloaf Mountain and the time is 17:06 (5:06PM). The haze has somewhat disappeared and the mountains appear clearer. In the near distance is Corcovado (704m) with the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, behind that is Morro de Sumare with its television towers (768m)and in the distance is a still higher peak. These three peaks are part of Serra da Carioca Range, steep mountains that are part of the Parque Nacional da Tijuca. These mountains descend to the edge of the Rio de Janeiro city center, dividing the city into Zona Norte (north zone) and Zona Sul (south zone).
The upper and middle classes reside in the Zona Sul and the lower class resides in Zona Norte. Favelas (slums) are spread throughout both zones along the hillsides. Zona Norte is the older part of the city and it is there where most industry is located. Most of the hotels and all the world-famous beaches are in Zona Sul. Residents of the Zona Sul rarely go to the other side of the city. The same holds true for tourists, unless they head north to the Maracana football stadium or the Quinta da Boa Vista, with the national museum, or the international airport.
