Description

They call them " blind units " due to the fact that the cabs or engineers spaces are closed up. They are used in trains that require extra generator power or just for sheer muscle. They are called also " high hoods. Engine #6609 behind the blind unit is the same engine configuration wise but is classed as a " chop nose " as the nose was cut down to make it easier for the engineers to see. Both engines preform the same task and function, one is manned the other is not.......... .thanks for the peek

I find this a little strange basically because the engine is essentially the same beast as a manned unit. I'm assuming that such engines are constructed in this manner in order to save a little money but I doubt it's really that much. In that sense, why not just make it a normal engine that can serve multiple duties? In all cases, trains are fascinating machines. There's a lot more to it than most people ever realize. IIRC similar units are used in yards and called 'Slugs.' They idea is the same: pure muscle when and as needed.

Never seen one of these. What we call 'slugs' here are cut down very low vertically.
