Description
This was a row of shops at the town end of Caversham Road, Reading, at the junction with Tudor Road which leads up to the railway station.
Everything from the railway bridge, which was to the left of me as I took this photo, up to the town centre was demolished to widen the main road and make it dual carriageway as part of the cross-town route, an attempt to speed up traffic through the town without building a bypass. It failed completely in this aspiration as it tends more towards concentrating the traffic in the town centre.
Also, it suffered badly from lack of funds which meant that, though the building of the route started back in the 1960's, bits are still being extended and added to to this day.
The route has also been changed several times which has led to several interesting and historic buildings being demolished to make room for the road which then took a different course.
Still, I suppose it gives us something to talk about. :-)
This is the last of my monochrome shots with new skies for now.
