Description
This was a small road that ran through the middle of of the old Simonds Brewery site in Reading town centre.
The brewery was founded in 1785 by by William Blackall Simonds and moved to this site shortly after being established. Though Simonds merged with Courage in 1960, the brewery remained in operation here until 1980 when it moved to the outskirts of Reading.
After being taken over by Scottish & Newcastle Brewery, brewing continued until 2010 when the Berkshire Brewery was finally closed for good.
One of the descendants of the brewery founder, George Blackall Simonds, was a renowned sculptor and the man responsible for Readings iconic Forbury Lion which was erected in 1886 to commemorate the loss of over 300 officers and men of the Royal Berkshire Regiment at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan in 1880.
This is another of the old photos I've been scanning recently but the sky was pure white. I just couldnt resist adding a different sky and liked the effect so much, I have done a few other shots in a similar fashion. These will follow over the next few days.
Hope you like it :-)
