Description

A Messerschmit KR 175 bubble car (1954) participating to the 4th historic “Circuit des Ardennes”: over the week-end of July 2/6 2011, the pine-clad hill-sides of the Belgian Ardennes echoed to the sounds of motor racing’s past. 109 years before, almost to the day, the Automobile Club de Belgique created circuit racing, holding a race that began and ended in Bastogne and passed through Neufchâteau and Habay-la-Neuve. Messerschmitt AG was a famous German aircraft manufacturing corporation named for its chief designer, Willy Messerschmitt, and known primarily for its World War II fighter aircrafts. After World War II, the company was not allowed to produce aircraft. One alternative the company came up with was the three wheeled motorcycle/bubble car or Kabinenroller (cabinscooter) KR175 / KR200, which was designed by an aircraft engineer Fritz Fend. The cars were actually made by Fend's own company in the Messerschmitt works at Regensburg and Willy Messerschmitt had very little to do with the vehicles other than ruling that they carried his name. Production of the KR200 ceased in 1964. Apparently the German's had planned to use these during the Battle of Britain, but sadly the pencils kept falling out and landing in the Channel! So they went with their second choice which was the BF 109. Probably a wise move. ;) Great shot. I LOVE THESE.

Yeah, I remembering well, like Hendesse... There existed a poem about this car. "Siehst Du die Graeber dort am See? Das sind die Fahrer von VW.... Wer es treibt noch toller, faehrt Messerschmidt Kabinenroller!" (Do you see the graves there at the sea? This were the drivers of VW.... (Volkswagen beetle). Those who do it with more madness take Messerschmidt Kabinenroller)
