Description
I happened to be out fairly early, and happened to be with my camera no less, when I lucked into my best photo of an aircraft in flight, so far. I've long admired the beautiful shots of vintage and modern aircraft that so many folks here have posted, but I lack the kind of strong telephoto lens to capture such images. But living close to the "Yankee Air Museum" here in Michigan does give me some nice views on occasion. This morning I could hear the distinctive sound of their C-47 as it flew past, only a few miles south of me and surprisingly low. I already had my camera out so I waited, and sure enough: the lovely bird had circled about, and was coming back, almost perfectly west to east, and heading right at me. I started snapping like a maniac, tilting up to catch as much as I could, to the point where I was actually leaning back with my head all the way up, and even twisted somewhat to catch one more shot as it passed directly over me. All while standing on the front steps of my house.
It was a lovely view, and what better way to celebrate Independence day?

Great shots of this lovely, venerable aircraft. They have been around a long time. I used to watch them during the Berlin Airlift taking off and landing for over a year.
Wonderful captures Congratulations on getting these
Once again, Luck is with you! Thanks for that great shots, they're awesome!
Love the Dak! (Dakota/Skytrain/C-47/DC-3, etc). When I was taking flight training back in the mid-80's, the Transport Canada hangar next to the flight school had a DC-3 they flew regularly. Maybe that's what initially hooked me on radial engines?
Very cool. It is a distinctive sound isn't it, kind of like it's going soooooo slow it might just fall out of the sky!!!!
A graceful and lovely vintage bird that refuses to go away.... thankfully! An excellent shot of this beautiful DC3! I remember when I was stationed at Udorn AFB in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict, we had a couple of "re-purposed" C-47s. Nicknamed "Spooky" or "Puff the Magic Dragon" they were painted black, and had a whole lot of hurt hanging out the port side if I remember right...
Wow amazing captures and i agree with blinkings !
You sound thrilled and rightly so. Isn't it fun when a postable photo object comes to you right on your own doorsteps? This happens at out house too...we live 3 miles from two outstanding and flyable collections of WWII and earlier aircraft. The boys above have done a great job identifying the museum's C-47. I got a ride in one one day while in Vietnam (1965)...they were antiques then...but did a great job there.
Awesome collage of this vintage aircraft! Like Bill I too rode one these a time or two in Vietnam.
Great catch!
Awesome shot and picture collaboration- thanks for sharing! :-)
Wonderful to see and stirring to hear! Nice photos!
Excellent shots.

I'm such an oddball. I saw (and read the title to this) and saw the picture; and my first thought was oh, I hope it didn't poop...and then reality kicked back in and I realized that if something comes out of any sort of conceivable bombardier door, it's not airplane poo. So having gotten over my brief disappointment that airplanes in this world don't have digestive systems--and thus the need for waste-evacuation procedures--I sat back and marveled at the details you caught on this baby! WOW! You even caught the propellers perfectly: NOT an easy thing to do...this is a fantastic collage. I wish interesting things flew over my house. We just get kinda wimpy looking Southwest Airline jets going into Midway. Around here, those are dead common! C-47s possess a much higher coolness factor.
Beautiful captures!
