Description
This residential street is in the Copacabana part of Rio de Janeiro. It looks much like streets in Berlin or Paris, tree lined with apartment buildings on both sides. Except the buildings lining the streets in Berlin and Paris usually date from the latter part of the 19th century and are usually 6 stories high. Here, the buildings are much newer and they are usually 10 to 12 stories high.
All the buildings have limited underground parking (fairly crammed judging by the entrances). Cars parked on the street are parked perpendicular to the curb. Some of the trees are of tropical or sub-tropical origin. There are planters on the wide sidewalks with potted tropical plants. Most residences and small shops have permanent metal fences in front jutting into the sidewalks. Access to the residences is by buzzer, and the shops keep their gates open during business hours.
The fencing is to prevent theft and vandalism, which is very high in Rio de Janeiro.
The areas that are especially high in crime are Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and the historic Santa Teresa section of the city.
The problems with crime is such that the hotel leaves a brochure in the rooms for their guests, cautioning them that it is not necessary to carry a passport, a photocopy of the inside page is sufficient, also not carry too much cash because most establishments accept credit cards, not to wear any jewelry or watches and to keep things like cameras hidden if possible.
I heeded their advice, carried a copy of the passport page only, wore no fancy watch or ring and kept my wallet and camera in my zipped up pocket of my shorts.

Stunning capture my friend. God Bless.
Always find it very interesting to see hoe others live. Isn't Rio getting the Olympics in 2016? Don't think I'd be interested with the crime rate as it is.

Very good advice it seems Great capture, Sig
Rio is a vibrant city and full of life as it is, but unfortunately with a very high crime rate. During the annual carnival the prices for hotels, taxi fares and crimes spike. It is scheduled in the near future to host the Olympic Games and also the World Soccer Championship Games. I can't imagine what it will be like as far as prices and crime is concerned, but I will make sure to stay away. I saw a very nice soccer jersey in the Brazilian colors and of obviously good quality in one of the stores at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. It was the official jersey for the upcoming World Soccer Championship Games and I was all set to buy one until I was quoted the price - $US 250.
wonderful image and interesting info!
Very interesting photo and narrative. Very well done!!
eine schöne Strassenansicht!
Nice shot. I remember those Volkswagon buses.
Very beautiful shot! :)
The wide sidewalks with planters and ironwork reminds me of the Near North side of Chicago. We don't have that here, and it's beautiful to see! Wonderful capture!
A lovely capture of this pretty street. A shame about the crime rate in such a lovely place.
It is not good to be rich, over here :) excellent shot
