Description
The current Stanley Cup, topped with a copy of the original bowl, is made of silver and nickel alloy. Today, it has a height of 35.25 inches (89.54 cm) and weighs 34.5 pounds (15.5 kg). Originally inscribed the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the trophy was donated in 1892 by then Governor General of Canada the Lord Stanley of Preston, as an award for Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. It was awarded for the first time in 1893. The Cup became the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1926. The Cup later became the de jure NHL championship prize in 1947. The Montreal Canadiens have won the Cup a record 24 times.
There are thirteen teams engraved on each band except one band has twelve. A larger font was used one year. Jean Béliveau's name appears the most of any individual, ten times as a player and seven times as management. Henri Richard, with his name engraved eleven times, played on more teams that have won the Stanley Cup than any other player. Twelve women have had their names engraved on the Stanley Cup (as owners). There are several misspellings on the Cup. Many of them have never been corrected. Dickie Moore holds the record – he won six cups, his name was spelled differently five times (D. Moore, Richard Moore, R. Moore, Dickie Moore, Rich Moore). Info from Wikipedia.
As most of you know, this is my wife Jo with the cup. The etching on the left are some of the members that have been inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
