Description
Continuing directly on from last week and on-going ABIS (America Back Into Space) picture story.
At Floridas Kennedy Space Centre the first of four huge redesigned Payload Assist Modules or PAMs as they are more commonly known makes its journey via convoy to the Vehicle Assembly Building for integration to the underside of the ML-2 Test Article. Once the integration of the four units is completed the ML-2 will be lifted and strapped to the top of the huge Hercules Super Booster.
Historical Footnote
It occurred to me partway through last weeks gallery submissions that I had used the word PAM quite a lot but never gave any indication of what it actually meant. For those that dont know PAMs or Payload Assist Modules were/are modular upper stage operated rocket boosters with solid propellant and were/are used to launch satellites from the cargo bay of the space shuttle and from the tops of Delta and Titan launchers.
The PAM rockets were used to carry satellites from a low earth orbit to a geostationary transfer orbit or into an interplanetary course. The payload was spin stabilized by being mounted on a rotating plate. Originally developed for use with the Space Shuttle, different versions of the PAM were adapted to be launched from ground based boosters. Of the four different types of PAM motor developed only the PAM-D module is still used today as the third stage of a Delta II rocket.

Coolness boost for the info! Nicely composed render on a real image!
