Description
There are tunnels beneath the town I live in, and it seems no one has the final explanation as to why. As a boy growing up in a small New England town there are the usual odd tales told to frighten the youngsters. The Tunnels seem like an urban legend, but as I grew older I realized that there was some basis to the story. The tunnels run from an old mansion to a strange stone structure, we, as kids, called the fort. From there they went to the river, about a mile away. Last year, vast stone rooms were found beneath the main street,My friends and I knew about them and some even went into them through a steam grate in the back of the old barber shop. I never dared. The Historian from the local university said they were just cisterns for watering cattle. But they go on for great distances and branch off in numerous directions, not at all like a cistern. So the town fathers closed the book on the tunnels and access was sealed. And the legend continues. I have done some research into old town history, but nothing yet. So I submit the Tunnels for your viewing pleasure, enjoy!

Those tunnels may be the source of some of the accounts by H.P. Lovecraft - Excellent

Actually Lovecraft traveled extensively throughout this area, his favorite haunt was a small town on the New Hampshire border which, some think, was the basis for his "Dunwich Horror". Kind of interesting!
Perhaps remnants of Slave trading, holding areas, saw some like that in Axim in Ghana, West Africa under an old Slave Traders Fortress there, spooky and sad. Splendid work Peace
