Our sensors have scanned wide and deep. There is no sign of where the controlling intelligences are. Even with the time and resources available to me, I am close to admitting defeat. There is one final course of action I can follow, to enlist the help of the humans. They have survived here for years. Learning through suffering and loss, they know the location of the dangerous areas on this world. They have the local knowledge we lack. There are several enclaves across the main continent, some forming a network of fortified settlements. One of them I know well. It is the remains of a small starport which ten years ago harboured a wretched collection of refugees. I had directed our weapons across a narrow land bridge to form a defensive wall. It was a small gesture at the time, but I had seen enough of the destruction of the humans at the hands of the Enemy. Our scans show a small community still survives there, and see that a group of armed vehicles have recently arrived.
