Description
The Temple of the Jaguar Masks is one of three excavated and restored temples of the Lamanai (Submerged Crocodile) Maya site. This is the most impression Maya site in northern Belize. The site is accessible via a 30 mile trip on the New River.
This site was occupied as early as 1500 B.C., with the first stone buildings appearing between 800 and 600 B.C. Lamanai flourished in the Late Preclassic Time, growing to be a major ceremonial centre with immense temples long before most other Maya sites. So far 60 significant structures have been identified.
The archaeological site was excavated by David Pendergast in the 1970s and '80s, yet most of the site remains unexcavated and unrestored.
