Description
Inside the Chase County, Kansas courthouse.
These second floor windows would have provided necessary light when the courthouse was built in 1873. The second floor houses the courtroom and a couple of offices, with the open staircase in the middle of the space and open hallways around the stairwell.
No electricity in 1873, so natural daylight would have been an important consideration when designing a building like this.
We're so used to having bright lights indoors. The lights were on in the stairwell and the hallways, even though it was a brilliantly sunny day and light was streaming in through these tall windows.
Probably some OSHA regulation. :P

Wonderful capture! very beautiful windows
So elegant! very clever of you to get the exposure perfect..I can rarely manage this.
Wonderful golden tones
Wonderful looking windows, well captured Tara.
Wonderfully elegant. love it!
Some one went to great 'panes' to make and install these windows!!! Lovely shot.
Beautiful composition and postwork. Bet tall windows and very high ceilings throughout the building encouraged summer breezes...so essential before the days of air conditioning. But just think of the dust that would have come with those breezes! This was dustbowl country in the 1930s.
Beautiful shot and very interesting narrative - must be a beautiful building throughout.
not such a good view for the accused
lovely image
A very nice "triptych" Window :-D Beautiful shot Tara :-)
Beautiful composition and narrative. Love the softwarm glow.
bonne photo!
awe-inspiring courthouse & windows!
Nice symmetry.
Nicely done not to blow out the window detail Tara! Fantastic capture!
wonderful architectural details! RS
Beautiful photo, full of light and form! Excellent, Tara! Yeah, OSHA was't around when they built that courthouse - and they didn't have a litigation-crazed society like we do now! LOL!
The windows are lovely, but it's the light that's the star of the shot! Great capture!
Stellar lighting effects and the windows most unique in their shape. One of the last things the condemned sees before he is led off to confinement.
Wonderful natural glow. The flower is a nice touch.
I have never even thought about the importance of windows before electricity. Not only have you informed me ,but you did it beautifully with this foto.
Wonderful image. With the flowers and the lighting it looks like a shrine.
