Description

The Rooikat (Afrikaans for 'Caracal') is a wheeled armoured fighting vehicle built in South Africa for the South African Army. It was designed for combat reconnaissance and seek and destroy operations. Its secondary roles include combat support, anti-armour and anti-guerrilla operations. The Rooikat was used for deep penetration missions across the border, and the wheeled design was needed for speed and to counter sandy desert conditions that might slow tanks and tracked vehicles. from Wikipedia This vehicle has another trick up its sleeve: the independent 8x8 drive is electric, so they are able to turn off the diesel generator and run in silent mode. It was odd seeing the circuit done 'quietly'! Have a great weekend! Clive

Another fine photo of another South African excellent armoured vehicle. Due to extensive mine laying by Cubans in Angola, South Africa went from tracked vehicles (blow the track off, and it's a sitting duck) to 6 or 8 wheeled all-wheel-drive vehicles (blow a wheel off and it's still running). The sloped hull inside the wheels also deflected blast more efficiently, increasing vehicle and crew survivability. Also, less expensive than tanks. Thanks for posting this. Keep up the good work. :-)

Wonder how all that dust affects the camera lens and works? Great shot and I agree, the guys in the turret look like they're having a great time!
