Description
Described in 1883 as "the best improved farm in Chase county," [Kansas] the Spring Hill Farm and Stock Ranch became a showpiece for cattleman Stephen F. Jones and his wife Louisa. In 1878 they came to Kansas from Colorado wishing to graze cattle on the "fine prairie grasses" of the Flint Hills and then ship them by rail to market in Kansas City.
BARN: This massive 60 x 110 foot limestone barn was used to house animals, shelter equipment, and store the hay and grain that fed the livestock during the winter months. In 1885, Jones' livestock numbered 200 swine, 30 horses, 8 milk cows, 4 mules and hundreds of cattle foraging on the ranch's prairie grasses. The barn was built into the side of a hill for natural insulation and access.

very beautiful place and great POV in this photo!!
What a beautiful shot of the barn and I like the low sunshine making awesome shadows on the ground.
A superb shot! What a great house this would make! In the UK barn conversions are all the rage with those who have money.
Beautiful capture and clarity
Great Composition!
I like the access bit with the ramp to the loft above the barn. Creative and great use of the terrain. Great compo with the fence leading in, Clive

belle ferme!!
Clear, crisp and sharp, with terrific lighting, shadow and perspective, in this capture of just a portion of the old Kansas ranch, Bill. Incidentally, I just purchased the same model Canon camera that Tara uses.
A very impressive barn and a great capture.
Very innovative design and still looks great 117 years later. Great find and share Bill. Safe trip home. Dana
Superb composition, Bill! The fence leads your eye right into the photo. Most excellent! Good that you were able to stop at some of these historic places. Safe Journey to you and Tara!
What a great shot of this fine old building--and that fence line simply defines it perfectly!!
Super image Hugs Susan~
uphill walk over to the tree and maybe sit for a stare awhile wonderful capture warm hugs, Linda
full-size is a MUST on this, as your detail and radiance jumps out at us. The radiance of the gravel & the reflected light on the fence is scintillating. And the highlight on the silo & the wall between fence & house (and a little on a roof near that) are small but beautiful captures. And the opening sweep---as this thing comes tumbling down at us---is beautiful, even breathtaking. As is the stark contrast of the darkened brick of the house and the deep blue sky. Really a stunning shot of a very midwestern sight, and full size this piece just runs into ya...Beautiful, Bill. Really fine work.
SWEET SHOT...WE MISS YOU MY FRIEND :)
Wonderful capture of this beautiful old barn! I wish we'd had more time to explore the place. Wonderful light, shadow, composition ... it's superb!
