Description
Ysterplaat was visited by various USAF aircraft of which the C-17 was one. I was amazed that it managed to land in less than 600m! You can see that the engine cowlings are open to help reverse thrust.
The aircraft is powered by four, fully reversible, military versions of the engines currently used on the Boeing 757. The thrust reversers direct the flow of air upward and forward to avoid ingestion of dust and debris.
Papa might have been a rolling stone - this one was not!
Have a good week,
Clive
PS: the lens does make the houses look a lot closer than they are - there is even a railway line and dual 4 lane national road between them and the plane!

Humungous!
That's a real cool machine! I believe the RAF has a few of these now.. (Yep! Just checked, they have 8 so far..) Brilliant shot Clive, well caught.. Rob
Clive - did you mean to upload this shot to Critique Gallery???? I think a lot of folks are missing it! Great image of this monster plane and that landing distance is insane! WOW!
Ooops! Thanks Carin!
Oh my, what a monster! Excellent shot, and I'm always amazed at the lens foreshortening effects!
Great shot...here I am a aviation enthusiast and you are telling me good things I didn't know about an airplane built right here at Boeing. Excellent:)
Stunning capture Clive.
Yay, Douglas! Boeing only acquired this when they merged with McDonnell Douglas and Douglas had essentially finished fixing the myriad problems the early production versions presented costing McDonnell Douglas a fortune. This is the last aircraft type produced at the Long Beach plant.
That last comment is pretty interesting a lot of history there. Nice shot..
Always exiting to see those big planes !

Fine profile shot of this big bird.
