Description
This photo was taken some time ago at The Lone Star Musuem of Flight in Galveston, Texas. The "Tigercat" was a World War II design that was a bit too late to see service during the war. It was the US Navy's first twin engined carrier based aircraft. It was originally designed as a close support bomber for the Marine Corps, but most were built as either single seat fighters or as two seat nightfighters. A few were converted to photo recon planes.
The Marine Corps used the Tigercat in Korea as a nightfighter and night interdiction bomber.
"Big Bossman" started out as a single seat F7F-3, but was converted to a F7F-3N nightfighter. It was purchased from the Lone Star Museum and now can be seen on the air racing circuit.
Armament: Four nose mounted 20mm canons or four .50 cal. machine guns. Purpose built nightfighters mounted their guns in the wings. 2,000 lbs of bombs underwing or one belly mounted torpedo.
Maximum Speed: 450 mph (700kmh)

Very nice! and neat bit of history.I must confess mixed feelings about using these classic warbirds for racing.It's nice that they still fly but not what they were intended for.....just my opinion.Great photo, is the nose-art repeated on the forward u/c door? or is that something else?

Had one take off with an F8F right after the Blue Angels practice session at SeaFair this year (was a single seat version). They can make some noise and cover some ground... (GRIN)
