Description
The Italian Macchi 202 was the best Italian fighter built in quantity during WWII. It shows the family form of Axis single seat fighters built around the Daimler Benz 600 series of engines - particularly it's younger brother the Macchi 205 "Veltro" and the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61 "Tony." The Folgore's top speed of 370+mph, fine rate of climb and maneuverability made it a dangerous opponent despite its relatively light armament of two 12.7 mm and two 7.7 mm machine guns.
This fighter hangs in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Musuem on the Mall in Washington DC in good company with a P-51D Mustang (shown) and a Me-109 nearby.

Super, super shots! Impressive.. Got a book here called 'Courage alone'. About the Italian Air Force, 1940-43.. At the end it says the biggest problem with the aircraft was, they built them all like a Ferrari.. Hand Built, craftsman finished to perfection... Not what need in wartime at all.. Especially these.. A truly bizarre feature of this plane (as with the related C.200 and C.205) was the 8 and one half inch longer left wing to counter engine torque. A truly neat plane and good pics. I like their labels on the fin.
I was there some years ago, a quick tour but I would love to go back and take more time to explore more.. Nice work my friend.
