Description
This is a larvae of a Lappet Moth (Lasiocampidae pachypasa), a braconid wasp has layed its eggs in the caterpillar. They have pupated in the white cocoons hanging from its back. The caterpillar was still moving, but just barely.
Another bit of web search to find this info!

terrible-looking shot
How fascinating! I've never heard of such a thing. (Not that I research a lot of bug stuff ... but it's news, in any event!) Great find, and a nice, clear shot!
Its a hard way to go, but the wasp is crafty and a survivor... Great shot.

Nature is weird and wonderful, and sometimes terribly harsh!
I found a similar caterpillar 2 years ago. I wonder if they sometimes survive the wasps...
