Description
The Chena Indian Village also doubles as a sled dog training area for Susan Butcher's Champion dogs. Or it did in July 1986 when I took this photo. Susan Howlet Butcher, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts December 26, 1954 and lost her fight against leukemia and graft-versus-host disease on August 5, 2006. She was an American dog musher, noteworthy as the second woman to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1986 and again in 1987, 1988 and became the second four-time winner in 1990, and the first to win four out of five sequential years. She is commemorated in Alaska by the Susan Butcher Day (the first Saturday of every March - the traditional start of the Iditarod each year). The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, a grueling 1,112 to 1,131 mile race through arctic blizzard conditions across the Alaskan wilderness, which tests the endurance of both mushers and dogs over the course of one to two weeks. Excellent Info and a Great Pov and capture
Very nice shot and pov. :)
fantastic POV!!
My cousin lived in Alaska and was there for the Iditarod. She took some great shots of Susan as she readied to leave the starting point. I got a lot of information on that race since my cousin and Susan had a mutual friend and thanks to a light plane, they were able to make the finish of the race as well. Great shot of Susan and her dogs!
They race Siberian Huskies here, they look like Malamutes???
Fine POV in this shot of Susan and her mushers, Dana! She died much too young.
