Description
Insects spoke to one another in a number of buzzing, clicking, rattling languages: some danced to get their points across, others waved their antennae—tasting the air, and the chemical words carried on the breeze, venting their own chemical declarations (and inquiries) from whatever glands served linguistic purpose for their various breeds. It was a hot day. The insects had a lot to say.
There was traffic in the distance: car noise and the grinding rumble of diesel-fueled trucks. There were trains, thundering along metal tracks, squeaking as their metal wheels took curves as serene and sweeping as the moon’s outer limb. Men spoke in the distance: laughing—for a moment—at an argument between one of their compatriots and the woman at the current center of his affections. The men had little of interest to say; the insects—it seemed—spoke of more important, though cryptic mattes. It was always easier to listen to insects than the boisterous and argumentative sounds of strange, paradoxical mammals.

As you might guess, I took this picture at a particular truck yard in Chicago: the eastern-most border of the yard, where strange monoliths flake and peel in the sunlight, and where mounds of scavenged gravel flutter with grasshoppers and dead leaves. It was hot on the day that I took this picture, and as is common in a particular truck yard, I was bored. Upon reviewing the image on the readout screen of my camera, I thought of postwork. Upon returning home, I listened to music, fired up the Gimp…and postworked to my heart’s content. This is the end result.
As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all in the midst of a great week. It isn’t as hot today as the day I took this picture, and for that, I’m quite happy. I’m looking forward to autumn, though I’m enjoying the insects and the riot of life brought out by summer’s warmth.

I love that particular polyglot, the symphony of insect diatribes...nothing says summer quite like that does! And this image reminds me of a hot landscape seen through sunglasses, with the edge of sharp sunlight dulled by the lenses--the best way to see summer! Well done!

It's like barrows, gone to weed! I'm amazed that this is postwork. It has that same eerie feeling that I get when I see the HDRI images. The sky is incredible, so dramatic.

I keep focusing on that water tower in the distance. Such a rare thing these days, that with the trees surrounding it, it is like looking back in time. Back to a period when water towers were an essential part of every community. Your blue processing kind of reinforces that sensation of temporal displacement. Like looking through Irwin Allen's old Time Tunnel of Project Tick-Toc fame. Perhaps the aged artifacts of the truck yard project a temporal window back to the era when they were all new and considered state of the art. Back to when the area was only fields populated with chattering, heat loving insects, birds and the occasional fox. Nice work and I always enjoy your narration.

The sky in this image is phenomenal, and I really like the multiple textures that compose this photograph. You really do have an exceptional eye, and of course your post work brings all the elements together very nicely. With the absence of the architecture that graces many of your images, this piece invokes impressions of an earlier and simpler time. Excellent work!

You've given the commonplace a surreal look and very appropriate I think. Vacant and overgrown lots always have a fascination for me, places of mystery, places one can hide and listen to the world. You've really captured that feeling perfectly.
