Description
Spirit Island sits at the far end of Maligne Lake, in Jasper National Park, Province of Alberta, Canada. This tiny island is 14 kilometers, from the ranger station, toward the south end of the lake. There are no hiking paths to this spot and a 90 minute, round trip by boat, is the only way to see it. This landmark is one of the most famous views in the Canadian Rockies.
I heard a lot of stories, about Spirit Island, during my weeks stay in Jasper NP but can’t confirm any of them. Some say there were historical Indian graves on the island and other say that a old Indian chief, stopped developers from destroying, the beauty of this lake, by camping out on this little island until the Canadian Government protected the entire lake as a National Park. I should have researched this more before starting this series. I used to know the names of all the peaks surrounding this lake but age has failed me. I do remember that the peak, that is cut off, in the upper left corner, is Monk Head peak.
This series was taken with a film Pentax camera (July & August 1988) and recently scanned.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments.
They are very much appreciated.

Beautiful and fascinating photo and history! I really like this series
Absolutely gorgeous.
Great capture and story Dana. I think I have seen this lake, because I have been through Jasper and Banff NP twice, but I don't know the names of any of the peaks!
The magnificent Lake Louise...couple years ago I have a mural in my living room with the same POV :)
Scenes like this are priceless examples for VUE landscape artists! Your series is awesome. This is one of your best captures! Thanks for the extra info too.
A great shot Dana, such a beautiful peaceful place It looks a bit like Scotland in the UK but a lot more isolated.
Beautiful shot of a most peaceful and serene place!!
My earliest memory of Maligne Lake was laying on the end of a pier watching the hordes of trout that were always present right there. That would have been in the 50s, and fishing at the time was unbelievable, so they said. I had never seen so many fish before, nor have I since. Excellent shot! Maligne River is also very pretty. Many visit the Maligne Canyon though it had bad memories for me as my teacher's daughter slipped under the guard rail and fell into the canyon. His wife went in after her, and then my teacher went in after both. A truly brave man, he was the only survivor.
Very beautiful Dana, this shot would look good in many of the calenders etc that are produced for the tourists.
A really excellent shot.
