Clint Davis returns from his European tour to Chicago where he stored his Corvette roadster with his Aunt Marsha (his mother’s sister), Uncle Darcey and his favorite cousin, Joey Davenport. Joey has just graduated from High School and has been looking for a summer job to earn some money so he can attend the local community college in the fall. Clint spends over a week with his relatives and finds his cousin Joey to be quite as fascinating and enjoyable to be around as ever. But Clint finds Joey to be somewhat a challenge. Joey is a great kid, but for some reason, he lacks self confidence. Something must’ve happened to him somewhere along the line to get him in this predicament. His parents are both loving and very supportive, but they have not been able to figure out why he has become so shy and reclusive. Clint tries talking to Joey about it, but everytime he thinks he is getting close to the reason, Joey clams up and changes the subject. Finally, in frustration, Clint tells Joey, ‘What you need is a good, long road trip!’ He talks Joey’s parents into letting Joey go along with him. Clint has decided he definately wants to pursue a road trip on old route 66 and see what adventures he can find along the way. At first, Joey doesn’t want to go. He claims he needs to find work so he can go to college, but Clint tells him not to worry, and promises he will cover his educational expenses. He is also afraid and worried about the unknown, meeting new people, traveling to strange places. After some more smooth talking by Clint and supportive encouragement by his parents, Joey is finally convinced give it a try, with the proviso that if he wants to come home, he can at any time.
