Description
The current Imperial Palace (Kokyo) is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family.
Edo Castle was the seat of the Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan from 1603 until 1867. During this time the Emperor was a figurehead under control of the shogun. In 1868, the shogunate was overthrown, the Emperor was restored to power, and the country's capital and Imperial Residence were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. In 1888 construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed.
The Imperial Palace was surrounded by areas destroyed by firebombing. The main Palace itself (Kyūden), home of the Imperial General Headquarters, was heavily damagee by fire, even though bombing it was prohibited by the U.S. military command.
The Emperor was not receiving that day so I could only get pictures of the outside. This image was taken from Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace. Here you can see the Nijubashi, one of two bridges that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds and the main gate.

Very beautiful capture and wonderful history lesson!
Love your comment about the emperor! That water looks like beaten metal.
interessant!!
The tour begins! Most excellent! Beautiful capture and information! Too bad the emperor was not feeling sociable. Those two guards look fairly committed to keeping visitation to a minimum. Lovely detail of the bridge, walls and gate!

Looks quite easy to sneak into, but I wouldn't try. Shame about the damage. Wonderful shot and a great looking bridge.
