Description
The early Christian Church frowned upon the practice of bathing
Isabella, Queen of Spain, once boasted that she had bathed only twice in her life-time, once when she was born and the other when she got married.
And so it was that when the Portuguese arrived in Japan in 1543 and established a trading post in Nagasaki, the Japanese, who valued cleanliness, where horrified. They called their visitors Gaijin Furin or Filthy Barbarians.
Like the Portuguese before us we Gaijin Furin had come to the Ginza district of Tokyo to engage in commerce. Since I, as usual, had no money, I watched as my companions shopped for electronics. Afterwards it was time for lunch.

Wonderful capture and great story as well as the history lesson! Excellent
This does bring back memories! Cute kids in navy blue and white uniforms, bright buildings covered in kanji. My roommate Carol and I were part of a group of Air Force people who volunteered to be part of a cultural relations day. It was a festival with outside booths of local businessmen selling their wares. I was in a booth with someone selling windbreakers (which was convenient because I hadn't worn warm enough clothing) and Carol was in a booth selling some kind of toy. I don't remember how much the toy sold for but it was an amount that was half of a often used currency. Whenever a Japanese would give her this currency, expecting change, she would give him back 2 of the toys and pretend total incomprehension when they tried to tell her that they only wanted one. I don't know how her antics effected Japanese American relationships in general, but the business man she was helping loved her. This is an excellent image! Wonderful capture of the dynamic, and bustling atmosphere of Ginza! Very interesting narrative too!
Wow! That's too many signs...in any language LOL. Wonderful street capture.
Fascinating story! as is Lucinda's. In an environment such as your show us here I feel oppressed within a few minutes. I love the placing of the greysuit!

outstanding image, great composition! Isabella became famous for the color of her blouse, which borrows her name: it's a yellowish creamy white, possible after a year of wearing it without changing it, it took that shade.....
