Description
I knew this was going to be difficult and it was. After a normal render, I turned everything white and rendered that. In Photoshop, I then erased the normal layer on every "up facing" surface, to expose the snow layer. Painted in a few spots and some icicles, then added falling snow using noise.

Excellent! But I have a strange feeling that I can't explain. I feel I might have enjoyed the picture more if you hadn't told me how you did it! How weird am I?
Fantastic scene and great postwork!!
Fine work Dave.
Interesting method you used to acheive the snow effect. Well worth the effort. Great looking scene!!
Great scene and thanks for letting us know how you did it! Pretty clever.
looks great thanks for the insight
Well done man...multi pass is the way it's done professionally to the point that Vue now outputs in .psd layered format with everything you select on seperate layers....would make tweaking a breeze I figure...wish I could afford that app and maybe I'd do some animating.. ...
Good job! Your postwork made it!!
looks believably chilly!
Most excellent, Friend! Definitely a lot of trouble, but well worth it.
Wonderful work, well worth the work, IMHO
Great work. The footprints really bring it to life.
Spectacular results! It really looks like a cold outpost on some forgotten planet. Excellent job.
This is great - brilliant snow FX
Big thumbs up Superfrog. Awesome image and effort. Bravo and best from Dave :^)
Oooooooooh, this is terrific! Nothing like snow to really set off an image. I enjoyed the production notes as well. I, too, am a big fan of the erase brush. It must have taken forever to erase enough to get the snow to only appear on flat, horizontal surfaces. Great work! Congrats!!
