Description
This is a World War 2 pill box built to defend our country against a German invasion. The slits were for our home defense to shoot their guns from. This is one in a 60 mile line, across the south west peninsula, which included large square blocks of concrete designed to foil the enemy tanks. The invasion never came because Hitler turned his attention to Russia. A lot of the boxes and blocks remain today.

This is fabulous. Thanks so much for posting it and providing the info.
Just to let you know folks that I will not be uploading for a few days. Jeff.
Great photo. Love the forest green
Like the subtle camouflage provided by the foliage...which probably wasn't so close in 1939-40. The only things we have like this in the USA are numerous old coastal artillery fortiifications on bluffs over looking all our major harbors both on the east and west coasts and in Hawaii. No German or Japanese ships or submarines ever tested these fortifications (6", 10", 12" guns and huge mortars) but their very presence detered these combatants from trying their luck.
And now its a cycle path, how times change. Nice bit of local history Jeff, and a great picture to illustrate it.
Fascinating! We have quite a few left in Bournemouth.
Blends in well!
A beautiful photo. Also the mood and atmosphere. I like how he covered with all the green. We also have those bunkers. There's one in our street. And the funny thing was, in the street where I was born, there was one too. (very close to our house)
c'est votre ligne maginot!!elle etait infranchissable,donc les allemands l'ont contournee!!!logique!!bonne photo!!!
Beautiful wiev and green forest !
A reminder that not all historic structures embrace the beauty and majesty we often see - Some still summon stark rememberence of darker times - both past and present !
fantastic shot!!
That's a hard pill to swallow Jeff!!!! Great photo.
Great find and capture! Would make a good spot to play Paintball now. ;D

Wonderful shot, and thanks for the information!
A so wonderful and peaceful place!
Beautiful work!
How unexpected on such a lovely, quite country lane to see reminders of war. Glad it passed unused. Wonderful shot.
I think they have taken away all those that were left in Bournemouth. Shame some towns have chosen to remove these pieces of history.
