Description
This is the 1st part of a 3 part tale.
This is an Eastern Box Turtle. I am pretty sure it is a female because I think that males have red eyes. They are not one of the water turtle species but they can swim as demonstrated here. However, they rarely do so. In fact, this is only the 2nd time I have ever seen one swimming. The 1st time I saw one in water, he was mainly on a floating mass of vegetation and did not take to open water.
When I first noticed this one, she was in the middle of the pond and swimming strongly. I went to the shore line she was heading for and sat down to await her arrival.
I got this shot when she was a few feet form the shore.

Well, it is springtime, perhaps this is her pre-mating, primping bath for the year. Great catch of her se baigner. : )
