Description
Fitting the Forward Fuel Pod
Due to flight restrictions Carter has only been able to send a crew of two into space on this first flight of NASAs new Orbital Shuttle Atlantis. This will make the task of fitting the three generic fuel pods for the shuttles new reaction control and orbital manoeuvring systems that much more difficult to complete, and still more difficult as one of the crew, the commander, has to remain within the shuttle to operate its pair of robotic arms.
Slowly, ever so slowly the pilot approaches the fuel pod now suspended in space in the jaws of the robotic arm. Upon indicating to the commander that he now has a secure hold of the pod the commander releases it allowing the pilot to slowly manoeuvre it into its docking port in the nose of the shuttle.
Once in position the pod will be held in place via an electromagnetic ring allowing the one-way value in the pod to activate and supply fuel to the shuttles forward manoeuvring system.
The entire operation has taken five hours to carry out and it will require two more spacewalks for the two other generic pods to be fitted.
To be continued.
