Description
After 100 years the concrete is cracking, the blast doors to the ammunition rooms and the lifts and hoists for raising the shells to the guns are all slowly rusting. The huge gun pits are empty, their gigantic 12-inch guns sold for scrap years ago. Bushes and weeds grow blocking the commanding officer's once magnificent view of ships sailing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward Vancouver and Seattle.
The mission of this old Coastal Artillery fortification began in 1910 and ended 35 years later toward the end of World War II.
Today Battery Kinzie is only one of many tourist attractions drawing people from all over the USA and beyond to Fort Worden and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
The site is open to climb around to your heart's content. Our camp site was less than 1/4 mile away.
Note: Here's what one of the guns would have looked like on its' disappearing gun carriage. Click Here

A 100 year old soldier Bill and a super collage that represents its 100th birthday. Dana
That was such a cool place ... I can't wait to go back! I felt like we barely scratched the surface. You got some great rust shots, and this is a good way to see some of them. Nice work!
Amazing collage Bill.. Interesting place to look around for sure.. And a great series of pictures., Thanks for showing.. Rob
It's the type of place I love to visit. Cool views of yesterday's defenses!
Great collage Bill!
Must be the colours and the textures but dereliction makes for some great pictures. You have realy caught some great stuff here and your narrative adds to these great images.
Its interesting the old batteries and shore defenses and how rapidly they have been fading to only to be replaced by missle defense sites.
wonderful coverage!
