The Firsts...have a special place in history of the Gotth sword-bearers. Kerry Jourdain, here, is Alex's First. They run interference for them, tend to the family when the sword-bearer can't, and are the first on the list of People Who Have Always Got Your Back. But it's more than that: it's their lasting love, it's their devotion that raises them up. Kerry and Alex have known each other since they were eight, and Alex...having missed the bus home from his private school one day, found a pack of fifth-graders from the public school tormenting a feisty little third-grader, a short kid with a brown face. Alex stepped in, and two of them faced down the attackers. It's been like that ever since. A more unlikely pair you won't see, socially, for the south. Alex's family founded the town, and they're the scary people who live on the hill, from a very old, moneyed family. Kerry is the child of the two town 'hos (as he styles himself), and while his mom and uncle love him to pieces (and so they should, he's a sweet guy), he comes from a now-shabby-gentile Creole family from Bay Saint Louis relocated to North Carolina. Alex is about as white as they get, and Kerry...well, real mixed, and his father was as least part Cherokee. Alex always had a place, but Kerry...well, not sufficiently Black to fit in there, nor sufficiently white to fit in over here, too smart for this group, not butch enough for that group. But he always had Alex. And Alex can't live without him. As Alex says, Kerry is his "First, Last, and Always."
